And if the revenue stream is large enough, it can threaten your tax exemption if the IRS determines it is not substantially related to furthering the exempt purpose of the organization.
Another issue: To keep your property tax exemption from the county, you must comply with severe and complex regulations. For instance: You must file annual income statements in support of your property tax exemption. Every five years, you must get an occupational clearance certificate from the California Board of Equalization.
